Have you ever stared into your closet, overwhelmed by clothes but feeling like you have nothing to wear? I definitely have! I decided to tackle this problem head-on and build a capsule wardrobe. It seemed like a daunting task at first, but I'm excited to share my journey and what I've learned along the way. I hope my experience helps you create a wardrobe that's both stylish and functional.
Where do you even begin? That's the question I asked myself when I decided to create a capsule wardrobe from scratch. I knew I wanted classic pieces like a jean jacket and a black blazer, but the details were fuzzy. I already owned a pair of "High-Waisted OG Straight Ankle Jeans for Women" from Old Navy, which I figured could be a good starting point. But figuring out how to build around them was the real challenge.
Adding to the complexity, my body changed after having a baby almost a year ago. I'm still a size or two larger than I was pre-pregnancy, which meant I needed to buy a lot of new things. Plus, as a stay-at-home mom, my clothing needs are different now. I don't need dress pants or office attire. My wardrobe needs to be comfortable, practical, and still make me feel good about myself.
As I started building my capsule wardrobe, I realized the importance of focusing on quality basics. I started investing in basic tees made from 100% cotton in colors that I know I wear often. These are my go-to items for everyday wear.
I also found that having a few pairs of well-fitting straight-leg jeans is essential. They are a timeless style that can be dressed up or down. I opted for two different washes to give me some variety. I love how versatile they are!
For a more polished look, I added dress pants and button-down shirts to my wardrobe. These are perfect for when I want to feel a bit more put together, even if I'm just running errands.
One of my best finds was a black blazer. I had heard so much about the versatility of blazers, and I finally decided to try one out. I was amazed at how easily it could transform an outfit. I needed a Plus Size option so I purchased the Plus Size Women Clothing Casual Blaser Long Sleeve Pocket Office Lady Blazer Work Wear Jacket Suit Blazer Feminino Outwear C3037. It's casual enough for everyday wear, but also looks great with dress pants for a more formal occasion. The pockets are super useful too! It really elevated my style.

Thinking about color, I realized that sticking to neutral tones with a few pops of color worked best for me. I added items like black wide-leg pants, red trousers, and a grey pencil skirt. These pieces can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. I also included a white button-down shirt, a black silk shirt, a lime-colored cashmere sweater, and a light-colored blazer.
For outerwear, I opted for a trench coat. It's a classic piece that can be worn in any season. I also added a jean jacket for a more casual option.
To complete my capsule wardrobe, I chose a few essential shoes: white sneakers, black brogues, and tan sandals. These shoes can be worn with almost any outfit.
